How to Sew Rope Baskets, Coasters & More! | The Stitch Show Episode 6

Have you ever tried sewing with rope? It’s one of my favorite ways to turn a simple supply into something both beautiful and useful! For Episode 6 of The Stitch Show, I’m going to show you how to sew rope into all kinds of fun projects, from simple coasters and small bowls to big baskets and even a giant pumpkin basket!

Rope sewing is beginner-friendly, endlessly customizable, and a wonderful way to make handmade gifts that people will actually use and display in their homes.

What Can You Make with Sewn Rope?

The possibilities are endless! During this episode, I’ll walk you through some of the different projects you can create with rope and your sewing machine.

  • Coasters: A great place to start if you’re new to sewing rope.

  • Small bowls: Cute and practical for holding sewing notions, keys, or other little treasures.

  • Large baskets: These are some of my favorite projects to make as gifts! Fill one with goodies for a baby shower, housewarming, wedding, or birthday. Instead of using a disposable gift bag, you’re giving someone a beautiful basket they can keep and enjoy.

  • A giant pumpkin basket: Make a festive pumpkin basket with a lid that’s perfect for holding Halloween candy. When Halloween is over, remove the felt face and keep displaying your pumpkin right through Thanksgiving!

Ways to Customize Your Rope Projects

One of the best things about sewing rope is how easy it is to make each project your own. During the show, we’ll talk about ideas for adding extra personality to your creations, including:

  • Using contrasting or variegated thread for decorative stitching

  • Wrapping the rope in fabric as you sew

  • Dyeing the rope before turning it into a basket

These are just a few beginner-friendly ways to experiment with color and texture!
